Implants: Serious Habits You’re Overlooking

When you think about protecting your dental implants, you probably imagine certain very hard foods to avoid. You probably think about the ways you should be caring for your smile with visits and through appropriate dental hygiene. However, you may be overlooking some habits you participate in, possibly on a daily basis, that can ultimately send your implants down a path toward damage or failure. Learn more to avoid this dilemma!

Biting Your Nails, Eating Ice, Etc.

Do you tend to chew on something throughout the day? Perhaps you chew to concentrate. Maybe it relaxes you to snack by eating ice, while you’re working. Maybe you’re not even certain about why you do it but you know that it’s happening. When you consistently place pressure against a dental implant, you’re not doing anything good for yourself. Instead, you may cause problems. Do your best to cut out any additional chewing that isn’t for meals or the occasional snack.

Smokeless Tobacco

You assume that as long as you’re not smoking cigarettes that you’re probably in the clear? Unfortunately, any type of tobacco product can lead to problems for your smile that may then guide you toward dental implant failure. Remember that tobacco can cause your chance of experiencing problems like periodontal disease and oral cancer to greatly increase.

Bruxism

If you have bruxism that’s been diagnosed (or if you’re fairly certain it’s something you need diagnosed), remember that grinding your teeth back and forth or clenching them together can be very aggravating to your tissues. Your dental implant may not survive this constant pressure or friction. Seek bruxism treatment ASAP!
