Bone Grafting: Let’s Talk Details

If you’re just getting started in the world of dental implants, then you might not know much about what’s going on with your jawbone at the moment. You may also be unaware that if your jawbone could be in better shape (but it is not), we can often help you with a treatment called bone grafting. What is a jawbone graft and why on earth might you need such a thing? These are important questions. The answers may prove very helpful to your journey.

What’s Grafting?

If your jawbone is not in very good condition, you may need this treatment. What is it? Well, it’s a surgical procedure during which an area of damaged jawbone will receive an application of bone tissue. This may be your tissue. Or, you may request tissue from other sources. The placement, or grafting, means the bone is placed in order to bond with your natural tissue, thereby improving the volume and density of your jaw. If you have insufficient tissue, dental implant placement will not be an option. Grafting can fix that.

Why Does This Become Necessary?

How did your jawbone become damaged, you wonder? What happened to your bone tissue to cause it to shrink? There are different ways that jawbone damage occurs and leads to issues with dental implant candidacy. More common concerns include periodontal disease that progresses significantly enough to harm your jaw tissue. Then, there is tooth loss itself. When your body notices the loss of a tooth, bone resorption is common, which means that since the jaw tissue seems it is no longer needed, your body absorbs it.
