Dental Dictionary: Implant Details

Here you are, about to embark on the tooth replacement of a lifetime … literally. Once you receive dental implants, they will tend to stick around for life, offering you stability and comfort, as well as a natural-looking full smile. While the end result sounds lovely, the process can become a little confusing if you start off too quickly without gathering up and learning some essential terminology. Let’s fill you in on the important words you will need to have under your belt for easy learning and an even easier final decision.

What’s Osseointegration Mean?

Let’s begin with what’s happening between your dental implant and your jaw tissue once placement occurs: Osseointegration is going to happen. This is when the cells of your jaw tissue and the particle of the implant’s titanium fuse together! (It’s where all of that stability comes from).

What Is An Abutment?

This is a little piece that joins your restoration (dental crown) to your implant (root replacement).

Isn’t An Implant A Complete Replacement?

Not exactly. The dental implant is a post. It’s implanted, as it’s name implies, into your jaw tissue through surgery. Once there, it replaces your roots (not your entire tooth). Then, when it’s time, the implant provides the foundation and support to the rest of your tooth replacement (the part above your gumline). Therefore, implants contribute to full tooth replacement.

What’s “Restoring” An Implant Mean?

When we “restore” your dental implant, we are placing the artificial tooth (crown) or device (denture, bridge) over the abutment on top of your implant post, thereby finishing the replacement.
